about

Solar Fade stems from my interest in various types of audio and recording techniques - from field recording and electro-acoustic experiments, to modular and software synthesis.

Over time I’ve amassed a large collection of audio from these sources. While the sound of ice cracking underwater or a recording of lightning on Saturn as captured by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft may be sonically interesting, they don’t necessarily make for exciting pieces unto themselves.

In experimenting with differing methods of combining and recontextualizing these audio sources, I created a software system that could be fed this audio and set to run on its own, as well as be guided and sculpted while playing live.

More often than not this results in elements clashing with each other, and not in any sonically compelling way. These recordings are the curated result of moments where the audio sources worked together to create melodic and sometimes unexpected moments filled with texture, rhythm, and space.

The covers for the tape packages are cyanotype prints, and there are five variations of “planets”. If left in the sun for an extended period of time the cover will begin to fade. Removing from the sun will restore its color.
