about

Aros E-V is the ambient music project of sound artist Ryan Evans. Using tape loops, field recordings, and digital processing, he creates slow sound pieces that underline the passing of time. In addition to creating music as Aros E-V, Ryan does participatory music with older adults living with disabilities and chronic health conditions via Recreation Arts, an arts group he founded in 2020.

Markov Changes is a Minneapolis-based improvisatory music trio, formed by old friends Jonathan Harms, Chris Bouxsein, and CJ Alt. Straddling lines between free jazz, noise rock, and other experimental musicks, their craft ranges from silly to somber - and is often, as in the case of “Bref”, somehow both at once.

aearth / Bref marks the first time that Ryan and Jonathan have collaborated since they co-led Fox & Coyote, an alternative folk rock band. Fox & Coyote's last record came out in 2018, after which Ryan began making music as Aros E-V and Jonathan turned fully to his band Markov Changes. Some of their experimental leanings can be heard in Fox & Coyote's later releases, but in aearth / Bref they are on full display. Aros E-V and Markov Changes offer this split tape as an example of the branching, interweaving paths that they've come to love within the Minnesota experimental music community.
